So the Supercars season 2024 has come to a close with Will Brown crowned Supercars Champion continuing Redbull Ampol Racing’s champion streak in the 97/87 car.
And what a way it was to wrap up the season! The Adelaide 500 never ceases to put on a show but this year went above and beyond. As the tagline for this years event read “All In”, it was all that and more with a motorsports buffet consisting of the circuit track performances of Supercars, Super2, Porsche Carrera cup, Transams and Stadium trucks. Fans were also treated to a dirt track build right alongside the main track hosting a special round of FOX Supercross dirtbikes showing off their aerial antics, plus a world first tempory Speedway track was built by NAPA in an adjacent parkland to host the NAPA Speedway hosting stock cars and wingless. Wow, what an epic lineup of motorsports…. and did we mention the 8 bands gracing the stage Saturday and Sunday nights, featuring local heros Crowded House and Cold Chisel.
Damn thats BIG!
Our roving media specialist and photographer, Matt Wingard from MatWin Media was there to capture all the action from Wednessday’s Track to Town thru to Sundays finale with race 24.
Lets just focus on the Supercars action to start… and there is so much to cover. As usual we had a few incidents throughout the practise sessions but it was the contaversy with race 23 quali that left the fans asking questions when Stanaway, Hill and then Reynolds all hit the wall hard at turn 8 within 20 seconds of each other bringing out a red flag that ended the session prematuraly leaving Cam Waters to take out yet another pole bringing his 2024 tally to 6 and taking out the Boost Pole Position award.
The next day and quali 24 finds turn 8 biting again with Evans getting gready on the inside curb which pushed him wide to collect the wall exiting 8, destroying his car and leaving Jaxson winded by the impact.
That red flag put Feeney on pole to claim his 5th for the year and start race 24 from the best position. Before that lets recap race 23 where Cam Waters started from pole but was jumped by team mate Thomas Randal who lead the first 27 laps, but before that pain had already started with Mostert starting from pit lane due to a clutch issue.
Feeney made it a Redbull 1,2 leading Brown to the chequred flag with little incidents thru the race. This gave Will Brown enough points to secure the Supercars Championship for 2024 in his first year as a Redbull Ampol driver. Well done Will!
Along comes race 24 to end the season with a bang, and we did see plenty of biffs and bangs along the way to a dominant race win by Will Brown who go spun early at turn 7 to get going again in last position to then put on a masterclass of supercars driving to take the win after the 2 leaders for much of the race, Chaz Mostert and Brock Feeney, who battled relentlessly and always looked like it would end in tears, did exactly that at turn 6 with Feeney tagging chaz on the right rear and spinning him into the barriers… this left Chaz with a bent car with smoke pouring off the rear wheels looking like a race ending incident but Chaz found his own mojo on the Adelaide streets driving his damaged car “making it as wide as a bus” to hold off a bunch of challengers behind him, eventually with Randal taking third and with a 2 penalties to Brock handed Brown another win to end his fairytial year on the top step. Thats a lot of action!
But wait, there’s more… the Supercross kept doing their thing flinging dirt upon unsuspecing spectators (and photographers) on friday and saturday with some pretty impressive high flying action. Then it was over to the $3M tempory speedway track to witness yet more dirt throwing, this time from the 4 wheeled beasts that are Sprint Cars as they pound around sideways on their custom silt and clay track. It was one of the biggest crowds Australian Speedway has seen for quite some time with little to no specator space left on the saturday night running speedway in the heart of Adelaide city.
Then, if we must… we headed over to watch a couple of bands, you might have heard of one of them… an Adelaide born band, celebrating the big 5 0 of epic hits and good times that are now Australian folk lore and a write of passage, in fact it should be part of the immigration policy to list at least 10 Cold Chisel songs to enter this here brown land that is girt by sea.
Anyway, it was epic… but it’s only gonna get BIGGER next year when Supercars turns out a whole new season lineup with Adelaide host to the first ever Supercars Grand Final. OMG! You can read about the new Supercars 2025 season format.
Lets all regroup now, have a few frothys… you deserve it. And get ready for 2025 kickoff on Feb 21-23 at the Sydney 500 for the first round of the sprint cup.
